It's been some time now since I added any content to Mummy Loves Books, I disappeared into the internet void and some may perhaps have been wondering where I went and so I thought I'd give a little life update and let you all know what I've been doing for the past months.
In August of last year I literally one morning took a crazy notion to sign up for a BA (Honours) degree in English Literature and Creative Writing with the Open University. Did I think about it for more than say ten minutes - nope! Do I regret it? Absolutely not. It was a madcap morning where suddenly this seemed the absolutely right thing to do for me and so I followed my gut and signed up and now 9 months later I have completed my first module of the degree and am registered for my second beginning in October.
Maybe the fact that I did this without putting too much thought into it is the reason why it happened at all and why I've been achieving results I could only dream of before. If I'd sat and thought about all the reasons for and against doing this course I'd probably have talked myself out of it with all the negative thoughts about whether I was smart enough, or whether I had enough time to commit to it or if I was too old to start on this educational journey towards my dream career as a high school English teacher. All of the why I shouldn't do its would have won in my procrastinating head and I'd have missed absolute joy of a journey I've had this past 9 months.
I have loved my learning journey so far, I've covered topics from Creative Writing to Ancient Greek sculpture and religious buildings pre and post reformation in the UK and with each week I've learned something new and have thrived on the knowledge. I've met amazing people on this journey who have helped nudge me along when I was struggling, have laughed at my rudimentary identification skills of ancient sculptures at the outset of the course and then reassured me they thought the same things and we have supported each other every step of the way and it has been a joyous journey.
On the down side as I adjusted to life as a part-time student I allowed Mummy Loves Books to slip by the wayside a little, purely because I was focusing on studying and wasn't reading as much and I needed to reassure myself I was capable of achieving the results I wanted in my studies, but now that I know I can do that I feel it is time to start sharing my reading journey with you all again and perhaps have an opportunity to share some of the novels I'll be reading on my Open University journey and if I'm brave enough some of my creative writing.
